Every Other Weekend Custody Schedule: How It Works

The children live mainly with one parent and spend every other weekend with the other.

Two-week calendar

Parent A: 12 nights (86%) Parent B: 2 nights (14%) 2 handovers every two weeks

How the Every other weekend works

One parent has the children during the school week. The other has them on alternating weekends, usually from Friday after school until Sunday evening.

Long weekends are often treated as part of the weekend, so a PD day or holiday Monday goes to the parent whose weekend it is. MiddleWise can apply that rule automatically.

Pros

  • A stable home base during the school week.
  • Few handovers.
  • Works when parents live far apart.

Cons

  • The weekend parent goes up to twelve days without seeing the children.
  • Less involvement in day-to-day school life for the weekend parent.

Who it suits

Parents who live far apart, or families where one parent works long or irregular hours.

Common questions

How much time is every other weekend?

About two overnights in fourteen, roughly 14 percent, before holidays and summer time are added.

Can I add a midweek visit?

Yes. A regular midweek dinner or overnight is a common add-on that shortens the gap. MiddleWise has a schedule option for every other weekend with a midweek overnight.
